Boncoura’s Heavy Weight Leather Belt is built around a substantial 4mm-thick leather selected from a very limited number of hides capable of maintaining the required thickness and grain quality. The leather is produced using traditional pit tanning, a slow process in which the hides are moved through progressively stronger tannin solutions over a two month period. Unlike faster drum-tanning methods, this process allows the leather to maintain a particularly dense, compact fiber structure and firm grain. Boncoura deliberately keeps the subsequent finishing to a minimum, preserving the qualities produced through pit tanning while giving the surface enough individual character to distinguish it from conventional natural leather. A brown core ("tea-core") sits beneath the surface color and gradually begins to reveal itself with wear, allowing warmer tannin tones and greater variation to emerge over time. The leather development involved repeated cycles of tanning, belt production, extended wear testing, and refinement. Each iteration required months for proper evaluation, true to Boncoura's methods.
An original solid brass Boncoura buckle was designed alongside the leather, with its proportions carefully balanced to provide substantial presence without drifting into an overtly Western or decorative appearance. Its master pattern was shaped by hand, down to repeated adjustments to the placement, angle, and depth of the Boncoura “B” stamped into the reverse. Like the leather, the untreated character of the brass allows it to dull and develop a natural patina through years of use. The belt itself involves extensive handwork, including skiving, punching, edge finishing, and hand stitching with thread individually waxed by the craftsman before use. Designed to age as a complete object rather than simply wear out, the leather, stitching, and solid brass hardware will patina together and develop a character unique to its owner. A wild level of attention to detail for a not-so-simple belt.
